If you don't leave with a giant smile on your face and a heart full of fun, it is a totally “Tragedy” on your part!

As a massive fan of Steps both in the past and now, I approached the show with an open mind, hoping it wouldn't turn out to be another cringeworthy attempt to cash in on their hits through a theatre production, like some other past band endeavours. Thankfully, what I experienced tonight was pure nostalgic fun. The camp costumes, impressive stage setup, and great dancing, combined with outstanding live vocals created an enjoyable atmosphere. The storyline resonated with every audience member, regardless of their background straight, gay, or otherwise, reflecting various relatable experiences. This was all brought to life through some of the band's biggest hits from their seven albums and 38 singles, celebrating 29 years since their formation.
“HERE AND NOW” is not your average night out at the theatre; it’s an electrifying adventure that’ll have you singing and dancing in your seat! Inspired by the iconic hits of the beloved pop group Steps, this musical extravaganza has been dubbed “the biggest jukebox hit since MAMMA MIA!” by The Sun, and after seeing it, I totally understand why!
Picture this: it’s Friday night, the atmosphere is buzzing, and Caz along with her fabulous crew, dreams of a summer overflowing with love. But hold on! Just as they’re ready to dive into their fairy-tale endings, life throws them a curveball. Caz finds out that her own “happily ever after” is anything but perfect. And her friends are tangled up in their own romantic dilemmas. Will they find the courage to leap into the unknown for that happy ending? Trust me, you’ll want to be there to find out!
As the lights dim, you’re swept into a world filled with the infectious joy of classics like "One for Sorrow," "Better the Devil You Know," and "5, 6, 7, 8." The talented team comprising Steps, ROYO, and the legendary Pete Waterman have breathed life into these unforgettable tunes. The energy in the room is palpable, and you’ll find yourself dancing along right from the first note!
Now, let’s talk a bit about the story. Set in a seaside supermarket named Better Best Bargains, we join Caz McGovern, played beautifully by Lara Denning. With her powerful voice and captivating performance, Lara truly embodies the nurturing spirit of her character. Caz is thrilled to announce her plans to adopt a child just as she and her friends Vel, Neeta, and Robbie are encouraging each other to pursue their own versions of love. But everything gets turned upside down when her husband Gareth drops the bombshell that he’s ending their marriage, shattering her dreams and throwing the future of the store into chaos.
Vel, wonderfully portrayed by Jacqui Dubois, brings a comedic flair that keeps the laughs rolling, while Blakke Patrick Anderson’s charming interpretation of Robbie adds a sweetness to the mix. And shoutout to River Medway, a RuPaul Drag Race UK star, who takes on the role of Jem. After a slightly shaky start, River really finds their groove and brings Jem’s unique character to life!
But the real magic is in the collective talent of the entire ensemble. Their synchronised dancing is not just impressive…..it’s downright infectious! The choreography brought back so many nostalgic memories of the dance routines we all tried to master in the early 2000s. You’ll find yourself swept up in the fun, unable to resist tapping your feet along!
“HERE AND NOW” is more than just a musical; it’s a heartfelt celebration of love, friendship, and navigating life’s ups and downs. Directed by the award-winning Rachel Kavanaugh, known for her work on “Half a Sixpence” and “The Great British Bake Off Musical,” this show encapsulates the essence of living positively and embracing the journey.
Gather your friends, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready for a night filled with laughter, fun, and catchy tunes. “HERE AND NOW” is a feel-good show that will leave you grinning from ear to ear and tapping your heartstrings long after you’ve left the theatre.
