A brilliant Show that will have you gasping and giggling while you’re on the edge of your seat!

I had such a wonderful experience last night at the Lyric Theatre, where I got to see Our New Girl, an extraordinary new drama brought to life by the talented Nancy Harris, who you might recognise from her incredible work on the hit series The Dry. This psychological thriller keeps you entertained and invites you to delve into the thrilling complexities of family life and the hidden tensions that can arise.

The story unfolds in the beautifully crafted setting of Hazel Robinson's pristine London home, with the talented Lisa Dwyer Hogg delivering a genuinely captivating performance. At first glance, everything seems perfect—until Hazel’s husband Richard, played by Mark Huberman, sets off on a humanitarian mission to Haiti. This triggers a gradual unraveling of Hazel’s otherwise polished life. As she balances a struggling business and her troubled son, brilliantly portrayed by Canice Doran (Shared role with Milo Payne), the tension builds seamlessly, making for a gripping narrative.

The narrative takes an intriguing turn with the introduction of Annie, the seemingly ideal nanny, portrayed by the enchanting Jeanne Nicole Ní Áinle. Annie's confidence and mysterious nature quickly reveal that her intentions go far beyond just caring for the children, throwing Hazel’s already shaky world into a whirlwind of chaos and uncertainty. The unfolding drama kept everyone on the edge of their seats, with bursts of gasps and laughter echoing through the theatre as the characters faced their trials.

Director Rhiann Jeffrey has done a remarkable job, creating a visually stunning production with incredible attention to detail. From the lifelike rain streaming down the windows to the vibrant garden branches, the stage design draws you right into Hazel’s tumultuous life. The clever use of LED lighting and the dynamic orchestral score elevate the suspense, making every scene transition feel electric and alive.

What really shines in Our New Girl is its poignant exploration of modern parenthood and the choices we make. Harris has crafted a story that resonates deeply, especially with anyone navigating the complexities of family life. The cast's chemistry is palpable, with each actor beautifully complementing the others, resulting in an exhilarating performance that captivated the audience from beginning to end.

The standing ovation at the show's close spoke volumes about this production's impact. Our New Girl is not just a play; it’s a compelling psychological journey that expertly weaves dark humor with gripping drama. If you have the opportunity, do not miss out on this outstanding performance at the Lyric Theatre—it’s an experience that will stay with you long after the curtain falls!

Our New Girl runs at the Lyric Theatre to 4 May 2025. Tickets and further information are available at www.lyrictheatre.co.uk
