If you’re considering attending Ghost Stories at Belfast’s Grand Opera House, prepare for an intense theatrical experience that masterfully blends psychological suspense with theatrical innovation.

Conceived by Jeremy Dyson (The League of Gentlemen) and Andy Nyman (co-creator of Derren Brown’s stage shows), this production has earned widespread acclaim for its unique and chilling approach to horror on stage.

We attended opening night with a mix of trepidation and excitement, unsure of what to expect and that uncertainty proved part of the thrill. The play unfolds through a series of unsettling narratives, each recounted by different characters and linked by the investigations of Professor Goodman, a parapsychologist and skeptic. The structure cleverly immerses the audience in a world where the boundaries between the natural and supernatural grow disturbingly thin.

The production’s atmosphere is a standout. Clever set design and moody lighting create a constant sense of unease, while the sound and special effects punctuate key moments with genuine fright. It’s immersive, smartly paced, and deeply unnerving. The strong cast delivers grounded, believable performances that draw you in, and just when you start to feel safe, the play delivers moments that will make you gasp, if not outright shriek as we heard all around us!

What elevates Ghost Stories beyond a simple scare-fest is its psychological depth and subtle commentary on belief, fear, and memory. The tension is expertly crafted that even moments of silence feel loaded with menace.

Ghost Stories runs until Saturday 31st May. Catch it if you dare! Tickets available via goh.co.uk
