Big, Bold and Colourful! - Opening night of the Hairspray 24/25 Tour
The Grand Opera House Belfast was transported to the ‘60’s’ as Hairspray the Musical launched the first show of its 2024/25 tour.
This new production, co-directed by Brenda Edwards alongside PaulKerryson, offers a delightful take on the beloved classic. With the acclaimed Drew McOnie handling choreography, the stage was alive with energy and excitement.
For those unfamiliar with Hairspray’s plot, the story unfolds in the vibrant yet segregated Baltimore of 1962. Tracy Turnblad, played with infectious enthusiasm by the talented Alexandra Emmerson Kirby, dreams of dancing her way onto national TV. Her dreams set her on a journey that challenges societal norms and fights for equality, all while capturing the heart of the charming Link Larkin (Solomon Davy). It’s a heartwarming and toe-tapping tale, and this production captivated the audience from the start.
It was hard to believe it was Kirby's professional debut - her infectious enthusiasm and vocal prowess made her portrayal both refreshing and heartwarming. Her rendition of "GoodMorning Baltimore" set the tone perfectly, drawing the audience into Tracy's world with exuberance.
Vanessa Dumatey faced the daunting task of filling BrendaEdwards' legendary shoes as Motormouth Maybelle, and she did so with aplomb. Dumatey brought her own flair to the character, delivering sass, soul, and soaring vocals that did justice to this iconic role. Her performance of "I Know WhereI've Been" was powerful enough to send tingles down the spine, reminding everyone of the enduring importance of Hairspray's message.
Playing the villainous Velma Von Tussle, Gina Murrayproved to be perfect for the role. Her delightful mix of comedy and menace added an exciting dynamic to the show.
The comedic highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the duo of Neil Hurst and Dermot Canavan as Edna and Wilbur Turnblad. Their natural chemistry burst to life in every scene, with "You're Timeless to Me" as the comedic pinnacle. Known for its improvisational elements, this number had the audience—and indeed the actors—laughing hysterically. Hurst and Canavan’s playful banter and unexpected antics were an absolute joy to behold.
It was impressive to see how the entire cast resonated so well together. Their strong connection translated seamlessly through both song and dance, making it easy to forget this was the tour’s opening night. Each ensemble number felt like a well-rehearsed celebration, brimming with synchronised energy that only a deeply cohesive group could execute.
The production masterfully showcased all the infectious melodies that fans of the show cherish, such as “Welcome tothe 60’s” and the finale “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” Each performance was received with waves of applause from an enthusiastic audience, further highlighting the show's lively spirit and timeless appeal.
As someone who’s seen Hairspray five times, this production didn't just meet expectations—it exceeded them. Each visit offers something unique, and the 2024/25 tour is no exception. Hairspray’s timeless messages of love, diversity, and relentless optimism continue to resonate, more relevant today than ever. The fresh take by the new cast and directors reinvigorates the story while celebrating its rich history.
The creative team deserves endless praise for capturing the vibrant essence of the 1960s, from the eye-catching costumes to the dynamic set designs. Every scene was visually stunning, ensuring that the audience was not only engaged by the story and performances but also immersed in the period’s aesthetics.
Brenda Edwards’ transition from being in front of the curtain to directing was graceful and impressive, resulting in a production that feels both authentic and invigorating. Alongside Paul Kerryson and Drew McOnie, she has crafted a show that both honours Hairspray's beloved legacy and adds fresh, invigorating layers. Whether you’re familiar with Tracy Turnblad’s tale or experiencing it for the first time, this tour delivers an electrifying blend of laughter, music, and heartfelt moments that make it a must-see.
