NATURAL DISASTER - A story about holding on and letting go
Tinderbox are delighted to present Natural Disaster by Róisín Gallagher, a play about holding on and letting go. Following from the huge success of The Man Who Fell to Pieces and Ubu the King, Tinderbox Theatre Company returns to the MAC, 15th – 16th March 2019.
Writer and performer Róisín Gallagher said: “I am thrilled to be a part of Tinderbox's innovative and empowering Take Away Theatre project, enabling me to explore a deeply personal journey on a universal theme. I realised my Father was going to die. I found myself on an unwanted journey of holding on and letting go - fearful of forgetting and hurtling towards the inevitable at unnatural speed.
Natural Disaster started as a compulsion to preserve, became a fight to survive the deadliest of storms and now, in the aftermath, is a story of hope, courage and strength. It's a story about finding yourself after loss. It is a story for anyone who has ever loved. This story has no ending, forever is a long time.”
Tinderbox provides the unique opportunity for local artists to create and develop their own ideas through our Take Away Theatre programme, which begins each year in the summer with an open call for applications. One or two artists are selected each year and are offered a commission for development, which includes a full development week and the expertise of the Tinderbox Team, to nurture and develop their ideas through to full production.
Damian Smyth, Head of Literature and Drama, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: “This important initiative from Tinderbox allows artists to tackle a wide range of themes, including the most difficult, showcased on a professional stage to a live audience, supported by a highly-respected creative team. Róisín Gallagher’s new work deals with surviving both loss and love and the Arts Council is delighted to be able to support Tinderbox’s Take Away Theatre and this work in particular, which promises to be an exceptional experience in the theatre.”
