The Rainbow Project launches #shout4equality campaign for final week of election
THE RAINBOW PROJECT LAUNCHES #SHOUT4EQUALITY CAMPAIGN FOR FINAL WEEK OF ELECTION
As the election campaigns for the Northern Ireland Assembly enter their final week, The Rainbow Project, Northern Ireland’s largest support and advocacy organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender people, and their families, has published its policy priorities for the next mandate and has urged candidates to commit their support for LGB&T people across the region.
The #Shout4Equality Policy Priorities includes concrete actions which would have a beneficial impact on the health and wellbeing of LGB&T people in the areas of; education, health, gender recognition and marriage equality, among others. The document has been sent to all candidates in the Assembly election and they have been asked to publicly demonstrate their support for the policy priorities on social media.
Speaking on the launch of the #Shout4Equality Policy Priorities, John O’Doherty, Director of The Rainbow Project said: ‘Election day is fast approaching and this is the time when LGB&T voters want to see how the candidates in their constituencies are going to deliver for them in the next mandate. While there has never been a better time to be LGB&T in Northern Ireland, many members of our community feel invisible, marginalised and vulnerable.
‘To combat the inequalities experienced by our community, The Rainbow Project has developed the #Shout4Equality Policy Priorities and we want candidates to pledge support for these priorities should they be elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly.
‘The LGB&T community in Northern Ireland continues to grow, not only in terms of the number of people who are coming out as LGB&T but also in terms of our visibility, representation, political power and supportive allies. In some constituencies, LGB&T voters could hold the balance of power. It is no longer possible for elected representatives to ignore the needs of our community and by pledging to support the #Shout4Equality Policy Priorities, candidates will be able to publicly demonstrate their support for LGB&T people in Northern Ireland.’
