The Wedding Singer had us Partying like it was 1985

April 12, 2017

Team GNI were left smiling like Cheshire cats, singing the night away and partying like it was 1985 after attending a fantastic opening performance of the Wedding Singer in the Grand Opera House.

As the title suggests song is one of the driving factors in this clever stage abdication of the 1997 film The Wedding Singer, 2 original numbers from the movie have remained and 18 more songs have been added scored by Matthew Sklar. On skimming through the programme I was initially disappointed when noticing the lack of familiar music though this was quickly forgotten about as each piece told the story perfectly and took you on a great journey.

My particular favourites were, A note from Linda, If I told you and Move that thang a hilarious scene with Rosie and George aka Ruth Madoc & Samuel Holmes, it had the entire audience in kinks, when you go and watch you'll see why.

Not seeing the movie is of no importance as the story is easy to follow, a Wedding Singer (Jon Robyns) is ditched at the altar, this is a guy who musically missed the boat as his dreams of becoming a rock star don't come to fruition, left in tatters he comes to realise the love of his life Julia (Cassie Compton) has been working under his nose though again it appears he has missed the boat as she is already engaged to be married to a high flying stock broker Glen (Ray Quinn).

The story takes many comical twists and turns along the way as we see the back story and relationships with the remaining ensemble unfold, Ruth Madoc as Robbie's grandma, Sammy & George his band mates, Roxanne Pallett best known from Emmerdale usually plays the role of Holly though due to aliment Tara Verloop stepped in and lastly the ex girl friend Linda was portrayed by Erin Bell.

The cast, chorus and ensemble were so intricate, loved the choreography by Nick Winston, had my guest and I busting to get off our seats and join in, Ainsley Hall Rickets on of the dancers needs a particular mention, my eye was always drawn to him , so charismatic and entertaining

Anyone at a loose end between now and Saturday 15th April, get yourselves done to the Grand Opera House, you will not be disappointed
